March 16, 2020

Dear Sunnyside District Families,

On March 15, Governor Doug Ducey and Arizona Schools Superintendent Kathy Hoffman announced a statewide school closure of ALL Arizona schools through March 27, 2020. This means that students will not be returning to school after Spring Break. Our schools will be closed the week of March 23rd through the 27th. We know families have many questions about what a school closure means for students and how our District will manage this directive. Below is information about what parents and families may be most concerned about.

Food Service

Knowing that many of our families rely on school meals for their children, we will be offering grab and go breakfast and lunch to all children ages 1 through 18. Beginning Monday, March 23, families may visit the following schools in our District for meals between 7:30 - 10:00 a.m:

  • Craycroft Elementary School SUSD - 5455 E Littletown Rd
  • Drexel Elementary School SUSD - 801 E Drexel Rd
  • Elvira Elementary School - 250 W Elvira Rd
  • Los Amigos Technology Academy - 2200 E Drexel Rd
  • Mission Manor Elementary School SUSD - 600 W Santa Rosa St
  • Summit View Elementary SUSD - 1900 E Summit St
  • Apollo Middle School - 265 W Nebraska St
  • Los Ninos Elementary - 5445 S Alvernon Way
  • Santa Clara Elementary - 6910 S Santa Clara Ave
  • Rivera Elementary - 5102 S Cherry Ave

Please know that meals must be taken “to go” so that you can eat at home. If you show up to pick up breakfast, you may take lunch with you as well in one visit. Parents and students will not be allowed to eat on site. Families do not need to register for meals and there will be no income requirements.

Throughout the week of March 23 - 27, parents and students will be receiving communication from teachers regarding activities and assignments that students can be working on from home. If students or parents have questions on the work the students are being asked to complete, teachers will be available for support via email or by phone.

We know that communication between students and teachers is critical during this time and, therefore, asked all 4th - 12th grade students to take home their laptops during the Spring Break. If your child did not take their laptop home, school staff will be available during the week to allow parents and students to pick them up. Although this is not a requirement, we highly encourage all students to have their laptop with them so that they can better complete their required work.

Child Care

We understand that childcare may be difficult for many parents. Here are some places that remain open and that you can contact to inquire about childcare:
