STDs

MYTH: If I use birth control, I don't need to worry about STDs - right?

FACT: Birth control methods, like the pill, patch, Depo, ring, and IUD, while very effective at preventing pregnancy, do NOT protect against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV.

  • Condoms are the only method of protection against BOTH STDs and pregnancy.
  • For maximum protection, use both a birth control method, like the Pill or Depo, with condoms.
  • To further reduce risk of getting or passing on an STD, discuss with a healthcare provider about getting tested for STDs, including HIV, before becoming intimate, and talk openly with your partner(s).

  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) weakens the human immune system, and eventually causes AIDS if not treated. About 50,000 new infections occur each year in the United States and 1.1 million people are already living with HIV.
  • 34% of female testing positive for chlamydia in Pima County are high school aged (thenationalcampaign)

Preparing to Give Birth

Did you know: The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.

Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily.
