Congratulations to Adam Ragan who was named Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce 40 Under 40 Man of the Year!

Mr. Adam Ragan has quickly emerged as a teacher leader in our organization. He represents the Sunnyside High School English Department in District-wide collaborations where his voice is instrumental in shaping curricular decisions for the content area. His visionary leadership has helped to ensure that students receive a rigorous and challenging experience that helps prepare students for college courses.

Through his mastery delivery of curriculum and dynamic teaching energy, Adam draws students into the literature and brings reading to life. He is a firm believer in the development of student agency and does this by ensuring that students have a voice in their learning. He gives student choices on assignments and readings yet holds them accountable for a high standard of text selection. His rapport with students is excellent and although students are challenged, they also feel very supported.

Adam works closely with district leadership to help advise and develop/implement key policies and practices. In this capacity, Adam has proven himself adept at top-level management and advocacy.

Adam has undertaken a number of active roles in the community. He serves on the TUSD Family Life Curriculum Committee where he has authored the middle school curriculum and has co-authored the high school curriculum. He has also been co-chair of the Cesar Chavez Holiday Coalition organizing the annual march & rally and Chavez/Huerta Education Month. In addition, Adam is a former Board Member and former Board Chair of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona and was instrumental in raising $2,000,000 to open a youth center on 4th Avenue. This included spearheading the development project of the center, leading the initiative for rainbow crosswalks on 4th Avenue and its completion; worked on developing and then passing the first-ever ban on youth conversion therapy in Arizona alongside the late Supervisor Richard Elias.

Additionally, Adam is an adjunct faculty member at Pima Community College; former Mayor Jonathan Rothschild’s appointee on the City of Tucson’s GLBT commission, including serving as co-chair; former member of the City of Tucson’s Commission on Human Rights; member of the Alliance Fund Board of Directors; member of the Pima County Democratic Party’s Executive Committee; LD3 Democrats Executive Committee; elected precinct committeeman; member of Arizona Democratic Party state committee; member of the TUSD Bond Advisory Committee; and site representative for his school and on the Sunnyside Education Association Executive Board, where he ensures that the voices of his colleagues are represented.

Adam is a strong and vocal parent/student advocate when it comes to school issues with a broad sphere of influence – a tool he utilizes to ensure that important issues are addressed and resolved. A recent example of this advocacy work is an initiative with TUSD, the City of Tucson (Regina Romero) and SunTran where Adam presented solutions on how to lower district expenses on bus passes while increasing SunTran ridership.
