Noche de las Estrellas

In 1991, Sunnyside High School’s mariachi group “Los Diablitos,” was formed with the enthusiastic support of Principal Raúl Q. Nido.  A concert was scheduled to have young musicians showcase their talents to the Tucson community. Mr. David Membrilla, former Mariachi Director at Sunnyside High School, selected the name “Noche de las Estrellas” (Night of the Stars) for the event. The University of Arizona’s “Mariachi Arizona” and Arizona State University’s “Mariachi Los Diablos Del Sol”  joined “Los Diablitos” to make the 1991 Noche de las Estrellas a memorable event.

As the event grew other pieces were added, including the creation of the "matinee", a showcase of the district's elementary and middle school mariachi and folklorico groups, and an educational component of the festivities which is held prior to the big concert. Leading up to the matinee, teachers are provided with videos and lessons plans to educate students about the history of mariachi and folklorico. The culmination of this annual event is the Noche de las Estrellas Plaza Garibaldi and Concierto Extravangaza which takes place at the Casino del Sol AVA Amphitheater. Since its humble beginnings in 1991, the concert has been extended to include over eighteen mariachi groups and over twelve ballet folklorico groups. Over the years, great stars have joined us to performed in the evening concert as headliners. They have included Sunnyside’s own Monica Trevino, the versatile and talented Adalberto Gallegos, the legendary Mr. Lalo Guerrero, the young singing sensation, Miss Daisy Sanchez, Sergio Antonio, and Grammy Award Winners, Mariachi Divas. This year, we are excited to welcome "La Reina del Pueblo", Graciela Beltran.

Noche de las Estrellas operates with the following goals in mind:

  • To showcase the  talented and aspiring musicians and dancers from elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and universities within community
  • To assist students with college and university scholarships.

The mission of Noche de las Estrellas is to provide students an  opportunity to share the Mexican culture with their community through Mariachi  Music and traditional Mexican dances.

“Música de Mariachi…Tradición, Sentimiento, Pasión y Compañerismo.”
