Dear Sunnyside Families —

As educators, we look forward to this month all school year in anticipation of graduations, promotions and end of year celebrations. I'm deeply saddened that the senseless act of violence that took place in Texas yesterday has cast a shadow over what should be the most festive season of the school year.

Like you, we are horrified and utterly devastated by the news of the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. We share in the heartbreak we are all feeling for the community and the families who have lost a loved one due to this senseless act of violence.

School should and must be a place where students feel completely safe and secure. As such, school safety remains a top priority for our school district. We will be working throughout the summer with our district security team, in close collaboration with law enforcement, to review our safety protocols in an effort to continuously improve the security of our campuses. This is a review that happens every summer as part of our preparation for the opening of schools in August.

Additionally, through an existing partnership with the Pima County Sheriff's Department we are hosting our third annual active shooter preparedness workshop this summer that is designed to help teachers, administrators and staff develop critical thinking skills during high stress events.

We know that children and teens will process this news in different ways. Counselors are available at many of our school buildings throughout the summer to assist students who may need some extra support. We strongly encourage any student who needs additional support to call (520) 545-2015 to connect with a school counselor.

Please join us in keeping the students, staff, and families of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District in our thoughts at this time.

Sincerely,

Steve Holmes, Superintendent
