Public School Choice: Title I

Los Amigos Technology Academy

August 10, 2016

Dear Parent/Legal Guardian:

Based on the Arizona Department of Education federal accountability system, Los Amigos Technology Academy has received a federal accountability designation of Focus.

A Focus School designation under the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) is based on student performance data that placed our school among the ten percent of schools making the largest contribution to the state’s achievement gap. Being named a Focus School allows our school to receive more resources and support to improve student achievement.

School Choice

Los Amigos and Sunnyside Unified School district are committed to ensuring that all children achieve proficiency, but because Los Amigos currently receives federal Title I funds, you have the option to transfer your student to another school in our district that is not identified as Focus.

If you so choose, Sunnyside Unified School District will provide your student bus transportation from Los Amigos Technology Academy to the following choice of schools:

  1. Los Ninos Elementary School
  2. Sierra 2-8

Available is a list of information about these schools and how they compare to other schools in the district and the process of requesting school choice. Please contact Dr. Ed Dawson at (520) 545-2018 should you need assistance in selecting a school. All requests should be made to Dr. Dawson no later than November 28, 2016 .

Please note that families who previously used Public School Choice Transportation but are no longer eligible for transportation because their home school is not identified as Focus may choose to remain at the Choice school, however, no transportation will be provided by the district.

School Continuous Improvement Plan

Before you decide to transfer your student, please consider the following efforts that we are making to improve the academic success of our students:

Through the Focus School Grant we are providing:

  • AES – Associates for Educational Success provides professional development in Mathematics for all teachers K-6.
  • Capturing Kids Hearts Workshop provides professional development for all staff members to create strong effective relationships with students, parents, colleagues and community members.

The Sunnyside district also provides the following in support of improved student achievement:

  • After School Tutoring for 1st-6th students – especially those at risk of not scoring proficient in Math and Reading
  • Professional Development and Coaching for all teachers especially novice teachers
  • Training on all digital curriculum
  • Data and technical support in developing, monitoring and evaluating the Los Amigos Continuous Improvement Plan

We encourage all parents/ guardians to get involved in our efforts to address our academic challenges. Parents/guardians can become involved by participating in the development of the Continuous Improvement Plan. Please contact me, Valerie Lopez-Miranda at 520-545-3205 if you are interested in being part of a committee or would like more information on our school improvement efforts.

Challenger Middle School

August 6, 2016

Dear Parent/Legal Guardian:

Based on Arizona Department of Education Accountability system, Challenger has a federal accountability designation of Priority.

Federal Accountability

A Priority School designation under the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) is based on student performance data that placed our school among the five percent of lowest performing schools in the state.

School Choice

Challenger and Sunnyside are committed to ensuring that all children achieve proficiency, but, because Challenger currently receives federal Title I funds, you have the option to transfer your student to another school in our district that is not identified as either Focus or Priority if there is classroom space in your child’s grade level.

If you so choose, Sunnyside will provide your student bus transportation from Challenger to the following choice of schools:

Sierra Middle School
Apollo Middle School

Please contact Dr. Ed Dawson at (520) 545-2018 should you need assistance in selecting a school. All requests should be made to Dr. Dawson no later than November 28, 2016.
