Students Arriving Safely - Transportation

40 new buses were added to our fleet, thanks to voter- approved bond funds.

The safety, comfort and digital learning needs of our students were of primary consideration in purchasing new buses, which included air conditioning, free wireless access, seat belts and a state-of-the-art video system, allowing for greater security of our students while riding the bus.

Bus wireless (Wi-Fi) units provide student laptop connectivity to the school data network and the Internet. This is especially helpful when students have field trips or athletic competitions that require a long bus ride. The Wi-Fi is enabled through the same broadband connection that carries the video surveillance and GPS systems.

In 2013, a new bus routing and accountability system was implemented, which provides GPS real-time tracking of 80 school buses in the student transportation fleet. It gives student-level reporting of ridership, central review of bus location, schedule delays and other modernization advantages, including multiple real-time cameras that tie into the District’s security system.

Having onboard cameras has helped curb student behavior on buses. With three cameras on every bus, any situation can be immediately reviewed by school administration, who have full access to the video surveillance system. Although our students are safe as they travel on our buses, should a student medical emergency arise, the bus driver has immediate contact with dispatch, and district security can monitor the situation to determine what degree of emergency response is needed.
