Every Wednesday, students from Ocotillo Early Learning Center travel by bus across Tucson to take part in equine therapy at Therapeutic Riding Of Tucson (TROT), a non-profit organization located near Sabino Canyon that offers equine-assisted activities and therapies for children with physical and developmental disabilities. Research shows that therapeutic riding helps kids improve balance, coordination, speech, and communication and motor skills. Equine therapy also helps kids build confidence and emotional control. Ocotillo students typically ride the same horse throughout the year, and this helps cultivate a sense of empathy. The program is supported through tax credit dollars which make it possible for families in our district to access TROT's resources. One Sunnyside parent who was present that morning shared the impact of the program on her child. "We were recommended to Ocotillo. Our son does horseback riding on Wednesdays to help with a developmental delay...His posture and being able to cut things or color has improved; it's just amazing to see how much he's grown."  
The Sunnyside Alumni Association is seeking nominations for the 2018 Hall of Fame. This year's event will take place October 20th at Gallego Intermediate Fine Arts Magnet School at 5:00 p.m. The annual dinner is the signature fundraiser for the Alumni Association/Dollars for Scholars, which last year awarded close to $70,000 in college scholarships to graduates from Sunnyside, Desert View and STAR Academic High School.  The Hall of Fame awards were established to honor individuals or groups who have made notable contributions to the Sunnyside educational system, the community, or their chosen profession. The awards also honor those who have exhibited leadership and innovations that have contributed to academic success and the quality of life for the Sunnyside community. Dear Sunnyside Learning Community, Arizona experienced a watershed year for public education in 2018. The collective impact of teachers, parents, students and community members advocating for the needs of our public schools was inspiring and reassuring. This historical display of civic engagement was reminiscent of the activism demonstrated 50 years ago across our country, when many people felt disillusioned with the status quo. What I have learned from the great leaders of that era is that our common passion for righteousness as people is what ultimately unites us in our continued journey to shape the progress of our great nation. It is because of this passion that we continue to fight for what is right for our children in our public school systems. As educators, we know that our work is not just about student development, but about human progress. To this end, we convened a panel of industry leaders, students, teachers and community members and asked them to help us envision what the future holds for our students. This inquiry formed the basis for the next iteration of our Graduate Profile, and our vision statement: Every Child, College, Career and Community Ready. More importantly, this work set the tone for how our District will innovate in the area of student agency by measuring holistic competencies of learning that help tell a broader story about the wonderful students that we serve. Therefore, it is important to stay the course as a District. We will continue to support agency through our formative assessment work and through building better systems for collaboration. Although our roadmap for improvement is a complex one, it is my goal this year to bring greater clarity to our theory for change so that all educators in our ecosystem better understand how to to move the needle for student learning. The pivotal question: ‘What is the learning?’ will continue to drive our discussions as we dive deeper in thinking about our impact on performance. Be prepared to grow and learn together as colleagues, as we strive to get better at getting better. Like the social justice work of the men and women 50 years ago, our work at Sunnyside in 2018 will be led by brave thinkers who see our students and our system not for what it is, but for what it can be. Help us plan your student's transportation needs for the 2018/2019 school year. Your input will help improve bus routes. The safety of your student is our top priority; we want to make sure that your student's transportation experience is safe and timely. As we build out our school bus routes for the 2018-2019 school year. We are asking parents who have not yet returned the printed Registration Form for Transportation Services to please fill out the following electronic version. Registering your child for school transportation will allow the automated routing systems to be used to determine how many students need to be transported from each pickup location to each school. To ensure that our transportation service is used most effectively, we have implemented the following rules: District transportation services are not available to Open Enrollment students. It will be necessary for families of students under open enrollment to provide their own transportation. This includes students who are enrolled in a school that is not their school of residence. Walking to School: Students who live within the approved radius walking distance to their school will not be provided transportation. Exceptions to this rule will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Approved distances by grade level: Elementary schools: One Mile Middle schools: One Mile High schools: One and a half miles Exceptions: Students enrolled in magnet schools will receive transportation services. Students in Special Education will receive transportation services as outlined in their Individual Education Plan (IEP). McKinney-Vento Students Parents of students who were afforded school transportation under the McKinney-Vento Law will have to contact the McKinney-Vento office at (520) 545-2158 or (520) 545-3460 for school transportation eligibility.  For more information regarding the McKinney-Vento Law please click here.  Foster Students It will be necessary for the DCS Case Worker to contact the school district's Foster Liaison at (520) 545-2158 or aracelim@susd12.org, for school transportation eligibility for a student not residing within the Sunnyside USD boundary or school of origin boundary.   Please use the below form to register your child for transportation services. Confirmation letters will be sent to registered students during the summer, indicating the bus number, bus route and time the bus will arrive at the bus stop. Teacher Salary Increases In accordance with A.R.S. §15-903(E), as amended by Laws 2018, Ch. 285, §10, a local educational agency's (LEA) budget must include the prominent display of the average salary of all teachers employed by the district or charter for the budget and prior years, and the increase in the average salary of all teachers employed by the district or charter for the budget year reported in dollars and percentage.  The average teacher salary increase included on the FY2019 Annual Expenditure Budget for Sunnyside Unified includes: Average salary of all teachers employed in FY2019 (budget year: $47,654 Average salary of all teachers employed in FY2018 (prior year): $42,355 Increase in average teacher salary from the prior year: $5,299 Percentage increase: 13%
