The Sunnyside Unified School District, the second-largest school district in Southern Arizona will host a solar ribbon-cutting event this Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at Drexel Elementary as Sunnyside brings five of its 24 solar sites online. Light refreshments will be served.

Solar structures—many in the form of parking lot shade structures—have been installed and are online at Drexel and Craycroft Elementary, Lauffer Middle School, District Central Offices and Los Ranchitos Annex.  The contract for the project was awarded to SunRenu and financed through Sustainable Capital Finance. Via the agreement with Sustainable Capital Finance, Sunnyside will purchase its electricity from them, albeit at a reduced rate from Tucson Electric Power. No maintenance costs will be incurred by the District throughout the life of the 20 year term.

Sunnyside pursued the 8.5 megawatt (MW) renewable energy project driven by fiscal responsibility and environmental stewardship. It is estimated that 1 MW can power approximately 750 homes.Projected savings for the first year of the program range between $200-580,000. It is estimated the Sunnyside district will save between $26M-51M in the next 30 years.

The ribbon cutting will be attended by Superintendent Steve Holmes, Governing Board members, principals and industry partners from Sun Renu, Tucson Electric Power, Sustainable Capital Finance and other lead agencies.
