The Sunnyside Unified School District is proud to announce the return of Maestro Roberto Martinez as the new director of Mariachi Los Diablitos de Sunnyside. A graduate of Sunnyside High School, Roberto will roam the halls once again as he begin his contract on July 1, 2018.

Martinez, a Tucson native and renowned master of the vihuela, most recently served as music instructor at the Calmeca Academy of Fine Arts and Dual Language in Chicago and as director of Mariachi curriculum at the Mariachi Heritage Foundation. Like many notable Mariachi performers of the American Southwest, Roberto Martinez traces his roots to Los Changuitos Feos de Tucson and is perhaps best known for his 33 year residency with Mariachi Cobre at Walt Disney World.

Roberto, a graduate of the University of Arizona "is an icon in the Mariachi world,” said Sunnyside Superintendent, Steve Holmes in a recent interview with the Arizona Daily Star's Neto Portillo, Jr. The story, which was published in this morning's Sunday newspaper quickly made the rounds. By midday, the news had made its way back to the Midwest. "My phone has been chiming with 'welcome back home' and other congratulatory wishes. It is an exciting time for all of us," said Martinez over e-mail.

Martinez takes over the program after the sudden passing of Refugio "Cuco" Del Cid, whose memory will be honored on Monday, May 14th at 6:00 p.m. as Sunnyside High School formally dedicates the "Cuco" Del Cid Auditorium.
