Craycroft Elementary Offering New Opportunities for Students
AUGUST 3, 2018 / MODIFIED AUG 7, 2018 08:30 AM

By: Emily Biehl, Tucson News Now.

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - It is officially the first day back to school for the more than 16,000 students in the Sunnyside Unified School District and that means back to the books.

But Jim Ridge, principal at Craycroft Elementary, says that his goal is to create new opportunities for his students this year.

"Our goal is to build that opportunity for our kids to have that success when they get to high school; really strengthening that bond between elementary school, with what they did in elementary school, and building that for the high school," Ridge said.

One of those new opportunities: a bike class.

"We're bringing on a bike class so we can have kids doing some bike activities. It'll include both maintenance and physical activity," Ridge said.

Ridge says the bike class will be an offshoot of sorts from the BMX track modeling project that Craycroft offered to its fourth grade students last year.

One other big thing that Ridge says the school will continue to focus on in terms of opportunities for students is expanding its emphasis on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) in the school.

Last year the school brought in a 3D printer and structured their language arts program around real-world themes.

Ridge says Craycroft plans to continue that for their students and he hopes the students have more of an opportunity to use the 3D printer this year.

Along with that, Ridge says that the maker room, which is a space for students interested in engineering, will likely get more use this year.

Ridge says he also hopes to develop a relationship with Amazon so that the students will have more access to technology as part of that STEAM emphasis at Craycroft.
