Noche De La Estrellas

In 1991, Sunnyside High School’s mariachi group “Los Diablitos,” was formed with the enthusiastic support of Principal Raúl Q. Nido.  A  concert  was scheduled to have these young

musicians showcase their talents to the Tucson community.  Mr. David Membrila, former Mariachi Director at Sunnyside High School,  selected the name “Noche de las Estrellas”    (English translation: Night of the Stars”) for the event.  The University of Arizona’s “Mariachi Arizona” and Arizona State University’s “Mariachi Los Diablos Del Sol”  joined “Los Diablitos” to make the 1991 “Noche de las Estrellas” a memorable event.

Since its humble beginnings in 1991 the concert has been extended to include over eighteen mariachi  groups and over twelve ballet  folklorico groups.  We have also added an education component by hosting a matinee for the neighboring elementary and middle schools.  Teachers are provided  a video for mariachi and folklorico as well as  coloring books and lesson plans.  These are provided in an effort to help implement and instill the background of mariachi and folklorico in our elementary schools.

Over the years, great stars have performed in the evening  concert as headliners.  They have  included  Sunnyside’s own Monica Trevino, the versatile and talented Adalberto Gallegos, the legendary Mr. Lalo Guerrero, the young singing sensation, Miss Daisy Sanchez,  Sergio Antonio, and  Award Grammy Winners: Mariachi Divas.

· To showcase the  talented aspiring musicians and dancers from elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and universities within community.

· To assist students with college and university scholarships.

· To provide students an  opportunity to share the Mexican culture with their community through Mariachi  Music and traditional Mexican dances.
