Academic Decathlon

Academic Decathlon is a national competition in which a nine student team competes in ten different subjects including art, music, literature, and science against other schools in Southern Arizona. It also allows students to test their knowledge of math, history, essay writing, and speech. The team consists of students in the A, B, and C grade categories; so we need students with a range of grades, not just straight A students. You will all take the same tests at competitions, but you will only compete against students who have the same GPA that you do! Honors Academic Decathlon can be taken as an elective class (for Honors credit), Honors Academic Decathlon is the title of the class in which you prepare for competition; or it can be done after school as a club.

Next year’s theme is TBA but we hope that you will join us!! We can’t wait to meet you!

Honors Academic Decathlon teaches skills:

  • How to prepare for and participate in interviews
  • How to study in preparation for college
  • How to write an academic type essay
  • And much more ...

Colleges and universities respect students who have participated in this competition. Some schools (ASU, U of A, and NAU) even offer scholarships for students who have participated in Decathlon, and it looks great on high school transcripts. This class is a great opportunity to make new friends and have fun competing with other schools! For the past 6 years Sunnyside has competed so well that we have made it to the State competition! (Which gets you scholarship money for college!!)

Don’t let this opportunity pass you by!

See Mrs. Heller in room 709, or Ms. Flanigan in Room 407 for more information...or write in Honors Academic Decathlon when you sign up for your classes for next year.

(The class is usually offered during 1st period, and receives Honors credit!)
