Freshman Academy

Imagine... a team of five teachers dedicated to giving your freshman student personalized support and an exceptional learning experience as they begin their four-year journey towards graduation and college or career.

Our Freshman Academy program has expanded the mission of high expectations for all students. A new era of smaller class sizes, more focused team teaching of curriculum, and individualized support for struggling students can be yours as a freshman in Sunnyside high schools.

Join the Opening Celebration in August 2012 of our new Freshman Academy buildings. Each Academy will have 15 new classrooms in an individualized setting aimed at fostering a smaller school within the Desert View and Sunnyside High School campuses.

About the Freshman Academy

A School Within a School
According to the Alliance for Excellent Education, over one third of all dropouts are lost in ninth grade. With that in mind, the Sunnyside Unified School District has developed strong Freshman Academies to ensure the success of each student entering high school. Our students don’t just have one teacher they have a whole team of teachers providing individualized support throughout their freshman experience.

At Sunnyside School District, all Freshman Academy teachers have teamed together to create an environment of high expectations for all students so they will be successful in mastering a rigorous curriculum. Our teachers integrate the curriculum to address national core standards in mathematics, science, English, world history and health/physical education. Our Freshmen are provided true 21st Century learning opportunities through the one-to-one computing program in the Freshman Academy.
