Welcome to a new school year!

I am honored and humbled to serve as Superintendent of the Sunnyside Unified School District. As an alumnus of the District who attended our schools K-12, I recognize the great strength of our community, the diverse assets of our parents and students, and the powerful contributions that our teachers and staff make each and every day. We are building on the strong history and foundation established by our dedicated and caring employees to make Sunnyside the district we all know it is capable of being: A world class public school system.
We embark on a new school year with much to be accomplished, and we begin our journey toward the completion of the recently established district Strategic Plan 2015-2020 goals. At the heart of the Strategic Plan 2015-2020 is our mission, which is to ensure every student will graduate ready for success in college and career.

The district strategic planning process was initiated in the fall of 2014. In the spring of 2015, two hundred individuals began developing plans to be completed by the beginning of the 2015-16 school year. The group comprised a wide cross-section of employees and community members working across multiple teams.  As a part of the planning process, the Governing Board and district leadership facilitated the development of a new vision, mission, values and goals for the District. The new vision, mission, values and goals provide a clear direction for the District, with the purpose of ensuring opportunities for success for all students. Priorities established through the strategic planning process will guide the allocation and utilization of financial and human resources. We value your assistance in helping to meet these objectives, which will ultimately shape the future of our district.

To that end, we will build on the strengths of our employees by establishing a stronger focus on collaboration to improve academic achievement. At the core of our work this year is a commitment to establish a professional development plan that is school based and teacher driven. We know that creating support for the continuous development of every child requires principals and teachers to build strong systems of collaboration. These systems require a focus on a shared understanding and commitment for quality instruction, a culture of internal accountability and collective responsibility for results.

I am convinced that we have exceptional employees, whose dedication and commitment to excellence and equity for all students will help us accomplish our goals for the year. To those new to our school community, we are looking forward to your contributions to our students, and we welcome you to our team. Have a wonderful and productive 2015-16 school year. I look forward to working and learning together with all of you. I will see you in our schools!
