Math Literacy Initiative
Sunnyside’s Math Literacy Initiative is targeted at raising mathematical achievement and opening the gateway to high school math. Using the new 2008 state-adopted math standards, we will create K-9 curriculum maps and pacing calendars to ensure our alignment prepares students for the new four-year math graduation requirements. Our curriculum maps will define our teaching to ensure students connect mathematical concepts to concrete experiences.
To implement our curriculum maps and ensure quality instruction, math coaches will be provided to elementary and middle schools. Rigorous assessments of the essential skills identified for each grade level will be administered to screen, diagnose and monitor the progress of math skills and instructional effectiveness. The math coaches will provide a high level of professional development; conduct daily classroom observations with teacher feedback; and support collaborative efforts to analyze the data from summative/ formative assessments and student work. In addition, fidelity to a research-based core program and a focus on targeted tiered interventions will be essential to our success.
- Increase the math achievement scores of students in grades 3-8 and 10 by 20% as measured by the state standardized assessment (AIMS) by spring 2009.
- By May 2008, curriculum maps and pacing calendars will be created for the new state-adopted math standards.
- By September 2008, all math coaches will have received “coaching boot camp” training to facilitate quality math instruction.
SMART goals will be developed for student proficiency.
