Lauffer student is MEC Outstanding Teen Citizen
Lauffer Middle School student Enisa Urquidez was honored as an Outstanding Teen Citizen at the Metropolitan Education Commission’s Crystal Apple Awards Luncheon May 4. She was nominated by Lauffer counselor Crystal Gandara.
Lauffer’s Donya Makus selected for UA summer program
Donya Makus, sixth-grade science teacher at Lauffer Middle School, was selected to participate in the University of Arizona Tree-Ring Lab Summer Enrichment Program for Secondary Teachers.
Top Teacher at Lauffer
Daniel Encinas, sixth-grade science teacher at Lauffer Middle School, received the Southwest Gas Top Teacher Award from the Southern Arizona Regional Science and Engineering Fair.
MESA Day state competition results

Chaparral, Lauffer and Sierra "Beat the Odds"

Lauffer registration for 2011-12 school year
If you have not registered your child for the 2011-2012 school year, you can do so between the hours of 7:30am to 5:00pm on July 11th through July 14th. We will have a late registration on Wednesday, July 13th until 6:30pm. We will be closed, Friday, July 15th. You can also register your child July 18th through the 22nd from 7:30am to 3:30pm.
Lauffer students awarded scholarships to Earth Camp
Lauffer Middle School students Alonzo Monarrez, Nathalie Gomez, Lange Navarro, Brandon Summers, and Deliah Shellhouse successfully completed an extensive scholarship application process including essays, teacher recommendations, and parent essays to be among only 20 students from Tucson accepted into the Laurel Clark Earth Camp. Lauffer Middle School eighth-grader Israel Ochoa was a winner in the Tucson Festival of Books Young Writers’ Competition.
Lauffer students hold Sustainable Garden Farmer's Market
Lauffer Middle School students held their first Lauffer Sustainable Garden Farmer’s Market, selling organic produce they grew, tended, harvested, packaged and priced themselves. Students were also responsible for publicizing and coordinating the event. Proceeds from the sale were reinvested in the garden project. Their teacher and project sponsor is Noah Mickey-Colman.
Volunteers invited to MLK Service Day with Lauffer Audubon Student Urban Naturalists
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day January 17, with support from Tucson Audubon, Tucson Clean and Beautiful and Pima County, the Sunnyside-Audubon Student Urban Naturalists (SASUN) from Lauffer Middle School will teach volunteers about buffelgrass and lead a buffelgrass removal effort in Julian Wash. This family-friendly event is open to everyone in the Tucson community. More »
Lauffer AVID students raise $235
Lauffer Middle School AVID students raised $235 by donating their time at a local Halloween-themed attraction during the month of October. Their teacher is Heather Woods.
MAC grants to teachers at Luaffer and Challenger
Three Sunnyside District teachers were awarded $500 MAC Grants and were honored at a check presentation ceremony Nov. 16 at the McDonald’s restaurant, 540 W. Valencia Road.

Sunnyside - Audubon Student Urban Naturalists at Lauffer
A Learn and Serve grant from the Arizona Department of Education is funding an after-school birding club at Lauffer Middle School called Sunnyside-Audubon Student Urban Naturalists (SASUN). Students meet every week at Lauffer and once a month they do a public service activity at Sweetwater Wetlands. More »
Two Lauffer teachers awarded McDonald’s MAC Grants
Lauffer Middle School teachers Noah Mickey-Coleman (7th-grade science) and Rene El Onache (art) have each been awarded a $500 MAC Grant. They will be honored at a check presentation ceremony on November 16, 2010 at the McDonald’s restaurant, 540 W. Valencia Road.

Lauffer Middle School sixth-grade student Brandon Thims was named the national VMath Math Maniac of the Week.
Math Hero at Lauffer
Representatives of Raytheon visited Billy Lane Lauffer Middle School Friday, Sept. 24, to honor teacher Corissa McClain as a Raytheon MathMovesU Math Hero. She is one of 32 teachers from across the country to be honored for engaging students in math through interactive and creative learning. Ms. McClain received a $2,500 award and a matching grant for Lauffer. More »
Lauffer teacher receives grant
Lauffer math teacher Corissa McClain was selected as the recipient of a $2,500 grant from the MathMovesU Math Hero Award Program sponsored by Raytheon. In addition, Lauffer will receive a matching $2,500 grant. Corissa was chosen from a field of 111 applicants.
Lauffer 7th Grade Students Raise Money for Endangered Elephants
After learning about endangered species, Lauffer seventh-grade students in Noah Mickey-Colman’s classes decided they wanted to do something about it. A student-led fund drive raised $223.03 during the month of April in celebration of Earth Month. Students then researched different wildlife protection organizations and decided to donate the money to the “Wildlife Action Group.”
Lauffer orchestra labeled “Excellent” in California
The Lauffer Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade orchestra participated in the Music in the Parks Festival in Anaheim, California and was given a rating of “Excellent.” Additionally, the orchestra earned first place in its division.
Lauffer students partner with Saguaro National Park
Noah Mickey-Colman’s 125 seventh-grade science students at Lauffer Middle School partnered with Saguaro National Park to participate in the Desert Tortoise Tracking program. Students used radio telemetry to track tortoises, gather field data, and make scientific observations.
Lauffer Middle School recycling competition
Did you know that when you leave the cap on a plastic water bottle, the recycling plant will not accept the bottle and instead, throws it away? To bring awareness to this fact, Noah Mickey-Coleman’s science classes at Lauffer had a bottle cap recycling competition in February. A total of 1,554 caps were collected, with first-place honors going to the 6th period class for their 782 caps. More »
