Elvira students raise money for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
Elvira Elementary students raised $900 through a schoolwide penny drive which they presented to the Southern Arizona Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Mrs. Kellogg’s third-grade class raised $330.
Elvira wins Roskruge Softball Tournament
Two SUSD teams competed in the finals of the Roskruge Softball Tournament May 21. Elvira Elementary won the championship, and Santa Clara won second place. The coaches for Elvira are Andy Townsend and Darlene Higuera, and the coaches for Santa Clara are Ernesto Badilla and Monique Noriega.
Elvira teacher completes the Chicago Marathon
Elvira Elementary School teacher Maggie Hackett recently completed the Chicago Marathon and has qualified for the 2011 Boston Marathon, the world’s oldest annual marathon.
SUSD counselors respond to crisis
Thank you to the following Sunnyside District counselors who responded to a crisis last week at Town and Country School on Wrightstown Road: Yolanda Uribe (Esperanza), Sara Logan (Gallego), Toni-Loquasto-Bequette (Elvira), Lisa Maguire (Apollo), Sagrario Espinoza (Challenger).
Elvira softball team takes first place
The Elvira girls softball team took first place in the Drachman Softball Tournament and third place in the Roskruge Tournament.
Elvira raises funds for Cystic Fibrosis
Spearheaded by first-grade teacher Tara Hudson, students at Elvira Elementary held a schoolwide penny drive and raised $500, which was donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Elvira students co-pilot aircraft
On Saturday, May 8, 20 fifth-grade students from Elvira Elementary—with the assistance of experienced pilots—flew airplanes as part of the Wright Flight program. In order to earn the privilege to fly, these students spent nine weeks studying the history of airplanes, passed a comprehensive exam, set and achieved goals, and pledged to remain drug- and alcohol-free. District elementary soccer tournament
Congratulations to Elvira Elementary on winning the SUSD Soccer Tournament, which was hosted by Mission Manor. Ocotillo took second and Rivera won third place. Mission Manor fourth-grade teacher Cathryn Molina organized and coordinated the tournament.
