Sunnyside District Parents as Teachers received the Loso Prize for Excellence in 2008 in honor of its "Fathers Matter" program. The goal of "Fathers Matter" is to get fathers involved in their children's education and empower them to advocate for their children. The Losos Prize for Excellence is awarded to only three innovative programs nationwide.

The Parent As Teachers program offers personal visits from a parent educator offering timely, age-appropriate information including:

  • Prenatal care for healthy fetal growth and development.
  • What to expect as your child grows and develops.
  • How to encourage intellectual development, curiousity, and language development.
  • Group meetings providing opportunities for parents to get together to discuss concerns and to share ideas.
  • Complete screening of child's vision, hearing, and development so any problems can be identified and treated promptly.

Program Services

  • Monthly personal visits by a certified parent educator.
  • Group meetings with your children and other parents. Meetings will provide information on age-appropriate topics.
  • One-hour Stay and Play Time offered once a month at neighboring elementary schools.
  • Toy and Book Lending Library.
