Counseling Mission Statement
Based on the national model from the American School Counseling Association, the mission of the Sunnyside Unified School District Guidance and Counseling Program is to provide a comprehensive, competency-based program designed and implemented to enable each student to have the necessary self knowledge, educational & occupational exploration and career planning skills to successfully participate in society.

Philosophy

The purpose of education, in its broadest sense, is to provide opportunities and experiences for youth to develop to their optimum potential. The Sunnyside Unified School District Guidance and Counseling Program believes that each student is a unique individual who has a right to acceptance, self-development, self-fulfillment and self-direction. Each student has a responsibility for making decisions and for living with the consequences of these decisions.

The counseling and guidance program in an integral part of the total school endeavor and seeks to improve the learning environment by involving student, parents, administrators, faculty, staff and community through specialized approaches that are consistent with district philosophy and community expectations. The counselors have a major role in helping all students become aware of educational and occupational opportunities; and to develop adequate and realistic concepts of themselves.

Self Knowledge:
Sunnyside Unified School District Students will demonstrate competencies in effective interpersonal communication and recognition of the contribution of self and others.

Educational & Occupational Exploration:
Sunnyside Unified School District students will demonstrate an awareness for life-long learning and develop educational objectives consistent with their individual skills and needs.

Career Planning:
Sunnyside Unified School District Students will demonstrate career and life planning competencies relating to their assessed achievement levels and interests.
