Community Service Award to Desert View grad

Congressman Community Award to Apollo’s Alexis Campos
Ruben Reyes of Congressman Raúl Grijalva’s office will be at Apollo Middle School’s promotion ceremonies May 21 to present the Congressman Community Award to eighth-grader Alexis Campos.
S.T.A.R. SWAT tops in Pima County
Representatives from the University of Arizona were at S.T.A.R. Academic Center May 15 to present students in the school’s Student Wellness Advocacy Team (SWAT) with an award for first place in the 2011-2012 Student Wellness Advocacy Team Competition. S.T.A.R.’s SWAT was the top high school team in Pima County in completing educational activities regarding obesity and chronic disease prevention. More »

S.T.A.R. Academic Center student Santos Montano’s entry to the annual Congressional Art Contest is now on display in the SUSD Administration Building.
Los Niños Hair Drive
Twenty-seven Los Niños Elementary students, parents and staff, including Principal Dedee Krause, will have their hair cut Monday, May 21, to donate to Pantene Great Lengths for wigs. The Hair Drive is in memory of Gerry Pionessa, Los Niños librarian for 17 years until she lost her battle with cancer a year ago.
Lauffer student is MEC Outstanding Teen Citizen
Lauffer Middle School student Enisa Urquidez was honored as an Outstanding Teen Citizen at the Metropolitan Education Commission’s Crystal Apple Awards Luncheon May 4. She was nominated by Lauffer counselor Crystal Gandara.
Sunnyside High senior wins Pima Federal Credit Union award
Sunnyside High senior Mateo Garcia is the first place winner of Pima Federal Credit Union’s IMPACT Youth Scholarship. He won a $2,500 award. The application included an essay on financial literacy, personal accomplishments and goals.
Sierra 8th-grader to receive Congressman Community Award
Sierra Middle School eighth-grader Karla Estrada Beltran will receive a Congressman Community Award in recognition of her positive attitude, leadership in Jobs for Arizona’s Graduates, and her work on community service projects at Sierra and in the community. Clara Ortiz of Congressman Raúl Grijalva’s office will present the award to Karla at Sierra’s promotion ceremonies May 22, 11 a.m.
S.T.A.R. students named Pima Merit Scholars
The following S.T.A.R. Academic Center students have been named Pima Merit Scholars for having a cumulative grade point average in the top 8% of their graduating class and will be awarded a four-semester Pima Community College scholarship: Oscar Arturo Ahumada, Victoria Yvonne Alvarez, Andrea Guadalupe Chavez, Ramon Abelardo Rodriguez and Estella Louise Trujillo.
