Dramatic increase in Desert View AP exams
A total of 418 Advanced Placement (AP) exams were taken by students at Desert View in 2012. This places it in the top 100 in the nation and first in Arizona for increasing the number of students taking the AP exams.

Desert View FBLA
Desert View students Autumn Pena and Maria Mata qualified at the State Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Leadership Conference on April 5 for the National Leadership FBLA Conference for the second year in a row. The Desert View Chapter Sign placed second at the Regional and fourth at the State competition. Rosemarie Bickford is the Desert View FBLA advisor.
Literary Arts award for Desert View senior Santos Flores
Desert View senior Santos Flores is the 2012 Pima County Youth Art Award recipient in the category of Literary Arts. The award, sponsored by the Pima Community College Foundation and the Tucson Pima Arts Council, recognizes excellence in Dance, Music, Theater, Visual Arts, Media Arts and Literary Arts. More »
Desert View MESA fourth in state
Desert View High School MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) took home 4th place overall at the state MESA competition April 21 with excellent rankings in individual competitions: second place in Self-Cooling Hat and Bottle Rocket Egg Toss, third place in On-site Engineering Challenge and Water Transportation, and fifth place in Paper Truss Bridge. Desert View senior Sadiya Buta has been named a 2012 Dell Scholar. An initiative of the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, the Dell Scholars program recognizes students who have overcome significant obstacles to pursue their education. More »
Desert View specialist performs Heimlich Maneuver
Debbie Edwards, special education transition specialist for Desert View High School, is a lifesaver. Last week, a substitute teacher was choking on a piece of carrot and went out to the hallway for help. She could not make any sound and several people walked by. Fortunately, Ms. Edwards noticed her and performed the Heimlich Maneuver.

Appointment to Air Force Academy for Desert View senior
Desert View senior Timothy Crain has received a letter of appointment to the United States Air Force Academy as a member of the Class of 2016. He is one of 1,200 students of 12,000 applicants to be awarded an appointment, which is equivalent to a scholarship valued at $414,000. Timothy has been a member of Desert View’s Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) for four years. More »

Desert View Jazz Ensemble
The Desert View High School Jazz Ensemble traveled to Canyon del Oro High School March 7 to participate in Jazz Festival. The group received an overall rating of "Excellent." Alvaro Rodriguez (trombone), Jorge Garcia (trumpet), Sergio Tabanico (tenor sax) and Edgar Acosta (alto sax) were recognized by the judges as "outstanding soloists."
Elks awards to Desert View seniors
Desert View students and sisters Alyssa Garcia and Vivianna Garcia were awarded the Elks Special Needs Scholarship by BPO Elk Lodge #385. Each will receive $1,500 to be used for postsecondary education. The Elks Club was so impressed with their letters that they are forwarding them to the national organization and there may be more scholarship dollars coming.

Desert View AVID students participated in MathMovesU Day at the University of Arizona on February 20. The experience was sponsored by Raytheon and the University of Arizona’s Office of Early Academic Outreach.

Desert View alumna in "Curtains"
Desert View graduate Alejandra Beltran will be performing in Pima Community College’s musical production of "Curtains," a murder-mystery musical comedy whodunit that ran on Broadway 2007-2008. A high school matinee takes place Friday, March 2, 10 a.m. at the Proscenium Theatre, Center for the Arts, Pima Community College West Campus. Tickets are $6. To reserve tickets, call 206-6986.
Desert View Corrido Contest semi-finalists
Four Desert View students were semi-finalists in the University of Arizona’s Corrido contest. More than 400 students statewide participated. Congratulations to Elda Tellez, Maria Alvarez, Gabriela Cordero and Esmeralda Lauterio. Their teacher is Brian Jones.
Desert View SWAT at national conference
Desert View High School students Jesus Gutierrez and Jaclyn Martinez were panelists at the National Coordinated School Health Conference in Scottsdale January 27. They represented Desert View’s SWAT (Student Wellness Advocacy Team) and were recognized at a luncheon as a "Success Story for Coordinated School Health." SWAT was also recognized in the national newsletter, Fuel Up to Play.
Desert View Drama champions
Desert View Drama won its fourth consecutive championship at the Southern Arizona Acting Festival, and was the school with the most winners and the most national qualifiers. Of 12 Superior winners, nine are national qualifiers. More »

Desert View DECA students won six medals in the regional DECA competition, and will participate in the State Conference in March 2012. Kino Rotary Character Awards to three SUSD students
Kino Rotary Club presented Character Awards Dec. 2 to high schools who exemplify the Rotary International Four-Way Test. Awards were presented to Adriana Parra of Desert View, Casandra Valadez of Sunnyside High and Alma Rabago of S.T.A.R. Academic Center.
Desert View Thespians
Desert View High School competed for the first time in the Arizona State Thespian Festival. Three students auditioned for college reps and theatre exhibiters; two in Acting and one in Technical Theatre. Desert View had the number one audition in both Male and Female auditions in Acting. More »
Desert View's Raúl Hodgers in Nogales Hall of Fame
Raúl Hodgers, assistant principal of Desert View High School, will be inducted Oct. 29, 2011 into the Nogales High School Hall of Fame.
Desert View senior honored by Pima County Sports Hall of Fame
On Sunday, October 23, Desert View senior Sadiya Buta will be honored Oct. 23, 2011 with the Charley Thornton Award at the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame’s 22nd Annual Induction Banquet. Sadiya is being recognized for her extraordinary academic and athletic achievements in the four years she has lived in the United States. Sadiya is on the Lady Jaguar tennis team; Stacy Haines is the coach.
National recognition for Desert View PE Partners SWAT
The Center for Disease Control was asked to send a success story to the White House of a school that exemplifies the Coordinated School Health Model for student health and improved academic achievement. Sixteen high school students on track to graduate this summer
Sixteen summer school students are on track to graduate. Ceremonies will be held Thursday, June 30, 6:30 p.m. in the Sierra Middle School auditorium. A record number of 855 students have already graduated in the Class of 2011 from Desert View, Sunnyside and STAR.

Desert View MESA
Desert View students competed with 13 other high schools in the state during Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) Day at the University of Arizona. Teams placed second, fourth, fifth and sixth in College PSA, On-Site Design, Rainwater Harvesting Model and Paper-Truss Bridge.
Murals unveiled May 20 at Desert View
On Friday, May 20, Desert View High School will unveil “the 8 multiple intelligences,” eight 3-D murals created by students under the direction of art teacher and Fine Arts Department chair Martin Brown. Room 5103 will be open for viewing of the murals throughout the day. More »
Kino Character Awards for Desert View, STAR and Sunnyside High students
The Kino Rotary established the Character Awards this year for students from Desert View, Sunnyside High, STAR, Pueblo High and PPEP TEC High School. Recipients of the awards in the second semester include Tanya Lugo-Torres of Desert View; Alejandra Mendoza of S.T.A.R. Academic, and Velveth Makepeace of Sunnyside High.

Desert View JAG student receives $3,500 scholarship
At the Jobs for Arizona’s Graduates (JAG) Career Development Conference in Phoenix on April 27, Desert View senior Krystle Chavez was named recipient of the USA Funds Scholarship for $3,500. Additionally, senior Jose Rojas won third place in Employability Skills. Fifteen Desert View JAG students attended the conference.
Desert View football players awarded college scholarships
The following Desert View High School football players have been awarded scholarships to play college ball: Daniel Goodman, Brigham Young University; Brandon Perkins and NJ Ross, Pima Community College; Felix Ramos, Hamlin University; Jesse Santana, Coe College Iowa. Additionally, Daniel Goodman was selected to the Southern Arizona Football Hall of Fame. Desert View’s head coach is Jim Monaco.

Sunnyside District students swept the Valencia Poetry Festival, with all seven awards going to Desert View and Sunnyside high students. Desert View winners are: Sadiya Buta, Alyssa Shestko, Luis Borboa and Santos Flores (Joanna Peled Award). Their teacher is Maria Elena Wakamatsu. UApresents sponsored performance for Desert View students
UApresents In the Schools sponsored a performance March 28, 2011 by the Trey McIntyre Dance Project for 700 Desert View students. Members of the dance group met after the performance with Desert View students in the UApresents Student Critics program; their teacher is Maria Elena Wakamatsu. Thank you to Sarah K. Desert View Future Farmers of America (FFA) students took top honors at the South Central FFA District Contest. Eight students from Desert View and two from Sunnyside have been selected to participate in a STEP Expedition to Alaska. Through challenging at-sea and wilderness expeditions, the STEP program seeks to help students develop the belief that they have what it takes to succeed. New Financial Literacy Center to open at Desert View High School
A January 18 Arizona Daily Star article highlighted the new center funded by a grant from State Farm Insurance agency owner Dan Kalm, "New center at Desert View offers money tips."

Desert View math teacher and department chair Alison Cornell has been named one of nine finalists for the UA/Circle K Outstanding High School Faculty Awards. She will be honored during pre-game ceremonies at the January 29, 2011 University of Arizona men’s basketball game.
Desert View AFJROTC food drive provided 25 food boxes for district families
The Desert View High School AFJROTC coordinated a Thanksgiving food drive that provided more than 25 boxes of assorted canned goods and turkeys for Sunnyside District families. Generous donations from the staff at Desert View helped make this effort a success.
Desert View students win Sustainability Composition Contest
The Tucson Association of Realtors Green Committee has selected the winners of its Sustainability Composition Contest. First place and a $500 prize goes to Desert View senior Burgundy Houk. The winner of second place and a $250 prize is Desert View freshman Cherria Martin.
Desert View cheerleaders compete in Agua Fria State Qualifier
Desert View cheerleaders competed Nov. 13 at the Agua Fria State Qualifier and qualified in two categories for the AIA Spiritline State Championship to be held Feb. 5, 2011 in Prescott Valley. Pom Line took sixth place while Partner Stunts took 10th. Lauren McIntyre, who teaches sixth-grade math at Challenger Middle School, is Desert View’s head cheer coach.
UA/Circle K Outstanding High School Faculty Awards

Desert View and Sunnyside High treated to UApresents In the Schools
UApresents has developed a new educational outreach program, In the Schools, to replace the school matinee program. As part of UApresents In the Schools, approximately 1,500 students at Desert View and Sunnyside were treated to performances Nov. 8 and 9 by Calle Sur—a musical production which teaches students about the culture, history, languages and geography of Latin America.

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the University of Arizona Poetry Center held a special event, "An Afternoon with Billy Collins and Friends," during which published poets and authors read their favorite poems. One of those poems, read by Ernesto Portillo, Jr., was a corrido written by Desert View alum Gamaliel Rabago. More »

Desert View teacher receives Saguaro National park grant funding
Desert View math teacher Yvonne Shouse created an after-school program called "Ride in the Park," and received grant funding from Saguaro National park. Through this program, 10 students from each partner school will be provided with transportation from school to the park, where they will be given helmets and a loaner bicycle to explore the park.
Thank you for supporting Desert View's Dig for the Cure fund-raiser
Thank you to all who supported Desert View’s Dig for the Cure fund-raiser. The program raised $1,200, including $300 donated by Flowing Wells. The donations will be delivered early next week to the Southern Arizona Susan G. Komen affiliate.
Desert View Dig For The Cure
The Desert View High School Girls Volleyball team is hosting a Dig For The Cure event to raise money for local breast cancer research foundations and to promote breast cancer awareness in the community. Team members will be collecting donations over the next two weeks, culminating with an event Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. in the Desert View gym. More »
Summer algebra students take top honors
Desert View and Sunnyside high schools held a combined summer algebra academy for incoming ninth-grade students. The program, which is sponsored by the University of Arizona Office of Early Academic Outreach, aims to teach algebra through hands-on projects. More »

Desert View AVID students earn scholarships
Five Desert View High School senior AVID students were awarded the Arizona College Foundation Scholarship—a $6,000 annual scholarship renewable for four years. Recipients are: Stephanie Stewart, Carlos Flores, Bryana Villavicencio, Lucus Rodriguez, and Karina Rodriguez. So far, Desert View AVID students have been awarded more than $688,000 in scholarships.
Desert View's newest Gates Millennium Scholar
Desert View senior Danielle Khambholja has been named a Gates Millennium Scholar. Danielle will attend the University of Arizona. This scholarship pays expenses for studies from bachelor through doctoral degrees.
Desert View earns third in state MESA
Desert View MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement) earned third place overall in the state MESA Day competition April 24. Teams placed in the five events in which they competed. Sponsors are Alexia Puig and Lisa Volkening.
Desert View Mariachi help break Guiness record
Desert View’s Mariachi del Desierto participated in breaking the Guinness World Record for most Mariachis playing together at the 2010 International Mariachi Conference April 22. The total was 577.

Desert View's NxT LeVeL in Macy’s parade
Desert View dance group NxT LeVeL has been invited to participate in the Macy’s Day Thanksgiving Parade in New York City this year. To raise money for this once-in-a-lifetime experience, Nxt LeVeL dancers are interested in dancing for any celebration, party or other event. DUI mock-crash awareness assembly at Desert View
On Thursday, March 11 at 9 a.m., Desert View High School, in partnership with Tucson law enforcement/emergency services, will hold a DUI mock-crash awareness assembly at Jaguar Stadium, 4101 E. Valencia Road. Closing comments will be given by the mother of Ursula Martin, Desert View alum who was killed by a drunk driver.
Desert View Decades Tournament raises $1,300
The Alumni Battle of the Decades volleyball tournament raised $1,300 for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The money will be donated to MADD in the names of Ralph Valdez and Ursula Martin.
The National Writing Project features Desert View and University of Arizona partnership
The National Writing Project features GEAR UP and the Write Place writing project partnership of Desert View and the University of Arizona. The partnership involves DVHS students and English Department Chair Maria Elena Wakamatsu, Tucson Teacher-Consultants Help Students ‘Gear Up’ for College.
Desert View students shine
Desert View HOSA student (Health Occupations Students of America) Julia Tarango took first place out of 104 students at the state HOSA competition in sports medicine. She also took second place in physical therapy. Her coach is Carlos Rue. More »
NASA Plant Growth Chambers being used at Desert View
Only 25 NASA Plant Growth Chambers are in existence worldwide, and one of them is at Desert View High School. Science teachers at Desert View have created a unique learning opportunity for their students, securing these chambers which are models of the growth chambers that will be sent on a mission to Mars.
