Summary of Impact


The Sunnyside Family Resource and Wellness Center (FRWC) strives to help students and families break the barriers to success by providing necessary tools to build stronger schools and a more vibrant community. The main office is at the Old Liberty School and there is a satellite office at Summit View Elementary. The FRWC works closely with Sunnyside personnel, families, and community organizations in order to provide social, medical, and mental health, services. Below is a Summary of Impact for the 2006-2007 school year:

  • Through the suspension abeyance program which allows middle and high school students to return to school following a long-term suspension on the condition that they attend counseling, the FRWC saved the Sunnyside Unified School District an estimated $45,2629.80.
  • 16,825 units of service were provided to 1,759 new individuals and 2,843 duplicated individuals.
  • 182 programs were offered that benefited 17,008 new individuals and 13,003 duplicated individuals.
  • 2,346 individuals received referrals via the FRWC.
  • There was a total of 300 hours of volunteer work donated to the FRWC.
  • El Rio Health Center Pediatric Clinic had a total of 3,903 encounters.
  • The Healthy Kids Dental Program was housed at the FRWC during the summer when school was out of session.
  • Almost $3,000 in grants from the Leonard White Education Fund were distributed to qualifying students in grades 6-12 with a GPA of 3.0 or higher to pay for academic enrichment opportunities.
  • In the inaugural year of the program, the FRWC awarded two $5000 Wellness Mini-Grants. One went to Liberty Elementary School for their Walking for Wellness Program and the other was awarded to Challenger Middle School for their Healthy Snack Program.
  • Through a generous donation from the Gordon Foundation and coordination with Payless Shoe Source, the FRWC administered a student shoe program. Over 300 pairs of new shoes were given to SUSD students.
  • More than 15 qualifying students benefited from the FRWC Glasses fund to help to pay the cost for an eye exam and two pairs of glasses
  • The FRWC helped to organize the Sunnyside Make A Difference Day. An estimated 2,000 individuals made up of students, parents & families, teachers, and community members volunteered to complete projects to beautify their schools.
  • The Summit View FRWC continues to provide programs from the University of Arizona Mobil Health Clinic and the Mobile Market from the Community Food Bank.
  • The Summit View FRWC initiated a Community Promotora training this year.
