Service Delivery
Kindergarten and First Grade: Gifted and talented students in their first two years of schooling are served by an itinerant teacher in a "pull-out" once each week. Children meet in groups of identified gifted and talented kindergarten and first grade students at a designated time each week at their home schools for a period of approximately one hour.
Second through Fifth Grade: Two strands exist for gifted and talented students in second through fifth grade, taught in resource classrooms. Students from ten of fourteen District-wide school in grades two, three, four, and five are bussed from homes or schools for one full day each week in an enriched and accelerated environment at one central site (Gallego Elementary). Identified S.U.N. students from four District schools have site-based programs, one full day a week, with enriched and accelerated curricula.
Sixth through Eighth Grade: Sixth through eighth grade students in the S.U.N. Program meet in daily classes at their respective middle schools; Humanities courses are currently offered for 6th and 7th grade students. Eighth grade students are currently placed in S.U.N. core classes, but in 2010-11, 8th grade students will be offered a Humanities course.
Ninth through Twelfth Grade: High school Honors classes are offered to all students through an open enrollment process in English, science, social studeies, math, Spanish and French languages, psychology, and fine arts. Advanced Placement classes for upperclassmen are available in the various disciplines t all students who are qualified.
