School Closure Information

Sunnyside Unified School District - a tech-savvy school district

This page has been created to provide information and documentation regarding the current Sunnyside Unified School District's School Closure Information for the 2014 - 2015 school year. Any prior information / documentation on Budget Reduction has been archived and still accessible HERE.

Three SUSD BLOG SITES have been set-up to facilitate communication and to answer questions on school closures:

On November 26, 2013, the Governing Board approved recommendations for budget reductions to meet the limitations of the budget with the loss of the Override election. The four major reductions recommended were as follows:

  • Closure of Los Ranchitos Elementary School
  • Closure of Chaparral Middle School and redesign as a K-8 Fine Arts School
  • Reduction and Redesign of Maintenance Department
  • Reduction of Central Administration

Also included in the recommendations where:

  • Redesign of Ocotillo Early Learning Center
  • Elimination of Elementary Specialist at each site
  • Reduction of Library Positions

On January 14, 2014, the Governing Board approved the reduction of administrative and coordinator positions totaling over $500,000.00 for the 2014-2015 school year. The following document details what positions are being eliminated and/or reassigned:

The Governing Board was presented with detailed information on the two options for transitioning students as they approved the decision to close Los Ranchitos Elementary and Chaparral Middle Schools. The following documents were presented:

District staff has put together a time line of actions regarding the identification and notification of employees, posting, interviewing and hiring for vacancies, and employee communications associated with these tasks. This time line was presented to the Governing Board and approved for implementation on January 14, 2014.
