Referral Process - School Age
Age 5 - 22 years
The first place to begin any discussion about your child’s progress or performance in school is with the classroom teacher. Talk to the teacher to see how the child is doing, what progress has been made, what problems exist, and what suggestions you both might try in order to help the student. The school might also begin the referral process because they notice that the child is having problems in the classroom and the strategies they are using to assist the child don’t seem to be helping.
The school will probably schedule a Child Study meeting. At this meeting, a group of school staff who know your child will meet to determine if they recommend that the child be evaluated. You can attend this meeting, or provide your ideas and input to the classroom teacher who will bring that information to the meeting for you.
