Through The Digital Advantage — part of Project Graduation — the Sunnyside Unified School District is using laptop computers as an incentive to decrease dropouts and increase the district’s graduation rate.

This school year, SUSD gave laptops to 505 ninth-grade students who achieved the Four A’s at the end of the first semester:

  • Academics: 2.5 or higher grade point average
  • Attendance: 95% or better attendance rate – no more than four excused absences, no unexcused, and must attend on the first day of school
  • Activity: regular participation in a school-sponsored extracurricular activity
  • Attitude: no out-of-school suspensions


Digital Advantage Scholars

The Digital Advantage laptop initiative has expanded to include outstanding students in the 10th, 11th & 12th grade. In the 2008-09 school year, 339 students received free laptops for achieving the following criteria:

  • Academics – 3.5 GPA or higher
  • Attendance – 95%, excused only
  • Activity – participation in extracurricular
  • Attitude – no out-of-school suspensions
