BEST Mentor and Beginning Teacher
The BEST Professional Development in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, Arizona State University, has selected Kim Roberts, program facilitator/instructional coach for Los Amigos Technology Academy, as the BEST Mentor of the Year for the Sunnyside Unified School District.
Los Amigos receives 21st Century Community Learning Grant
Los Amigos has been approved to receive a 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant for $127,574 from the Arizona Department of Education. It will fund the school’s after-school program, Leopard Spots, as well as parent engagement activities.
Educational Technology Specialist of the Year
Noah Mickey-Colman, the teacher technology facilitator for Billy Lane Lauffer Middle School, has been selected as the Educational Technology Specialist of the Year by the Arizona Technology in Education Association (AzTEA). He was nominated by Lauffer teacher Jackie Nichols.
District Touring Orchestra rates Superior
Congratulations to the members of the Sunnyside District Touring Orchestra who earned the top rating of Superior for their performance at the Music in the Parks festival in Anaheim, California on March 10. This group featured the top string musicians from Sierra and Lauffer middle schools under the direction of Gabrielle Halko and assistant director Bethany Wigtil.
Celebration marks culmination of Digital Advantage
The Sunnyside Unified School District will distribute netbook computers and iPads to 547 students from Desert View and Sunnyside high schools in the final year of The Digital Advantage.
Sunnyside District to receive 2012 ASPRA*tions Award for Excellence with a Specific Program
The Sunnyside District created a marketing campaign to recruit out-of-district open enrollment students that resulted in doubling the number of open enrollments for 2011-12 to a total of 1,210 as of December 2011. This represents more than $4 million in revenue.
Desert View vs. Sunnyside baseball, teams meet first time since 1991 state championship
The Desert View Jaguars baseball team takes on the Sunnyside High Blue Devils on Tuesday, February 28, at Desert View at “Pack the Park Night," commemorating the 1991 4A state championship when Desert View and Sunnyside went head to head. Desert View’s 1991 state title is the only baseball championship in the Sunnyside District.
National Digital Learning Day February 1, 2012
The Alliance for Excellent Education has organized the first National Digital Learning Day, a national awareness campaign designed to celebrate innovative teachers and highlight instructional practices that strengthen teaching and personalize learning for all students.
White House Hispanic Community Action Summit
The White House Hispanic Community Action Summit is an innovative open space dialogue where participants work together to define the agenda and shape outcomes. The summit takes place Monday, January 30 at Sunnyside High School, 8:30 am - 4:00 pm. It is free and open to the public
